Git Gone Wild: How to recover from common git mistakes

"Oh no! I just typed something into git and now my work is gone! Ahh!"

Don't panic. Contrary to popular belief, git is one of the most non-destructive version control systems available. When used right, git never loses any data, and even when misused, chances are very high you can still recover.

This talk will present turn-by-turn directions on how to recover from a wide array of common git mistakes, and also provide some workflows to minimize them.

Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Changing spelling errors in commit messages.
  • Split commits into multiple commits with logical separation.
  • Combining multiple commits into one.
  • Resetting the base commit when you accidentally branch off of the wrong branch.
  • Recovering from merge conflicts.

 As well as more advanced topics, such as:

  • Extracting parts (e.g. sub-directory) of a repository as a new repository.
  • Merging multiple repositories into one while retaining version history.
  • Removing confidential data accidentally committed.

Getting Value from Agile Feedback Systems: Every Day, Every Sprint and Every Release
Developing and using effective feedback systems is vital to the success of agile initiatives. In my agile training and coaching experience with 70 clients over six years at VersionOne and New Synergy Group, I have seen several agile teams suffer from dysfunctional agile feedback systems: no or delayed feedback, or ineffective learning from feedback. I will explain three agile feedback systems (Daily feedback, Sprint feedback and Release feedback) so you can clearly see how feedback loops may run dysfunctional, and how they can be repaired.

I will explain how to improve the Daily feedback system so it’s beneficial to each team member, how to improve the Sprint (Iteration) feedback system so it’s beneficial for each team, and how to improve the Release feedback system so it’s beneficial for each program or the whole organization. The key to improving these feedback systems is to understand and use visual boards and templates that capture and visualize if the double feedback loops (the basic feedback loop as well as the derivative feedback loop) are working properly, and to leverage connections among these agile feedback systems. These visual boards and templates have been refined with extensive use with my clients over the last six years. The derivative feedback loops (feedback on feedback) enable a learning and continuously improving organization.

ONE LOUDER: Taking git bisect to the next level

This talk starts with an overview of the fundamentals of git bisect – finding the commit that introduced a defect or some other issue, and how to automate that process.

Knowing the faulty commit is a good first step and sometimes sufficient in itself to solve the issue at hand. In practice however, the next steps can be more complicated. The rest of the talk will discuss techniques to go beyond the initial commit and take bisect to the next level, a "bisect within the bisect" if you will.

Refactoring Legacy Code Guided by Simple Design

Help! My Product Owner is 'Wrong Way' Peachfuzz!
Captain “Wrong Way” Peachfuzz was a character on the animated TV program Rocky and Bullwinkle. Probably the most incompetent sailor that ever lived, his crew considered mutiny, but instead installed a dummy control room, so that Peachfuzz would think he was in command, while the crew actually controlled the ship from below deck. How would you know if your Product Owner is steering you towards disaster? Even if they are, what can you do about it? In this session: • We'll have 5 volunteers from the audience to come to the front of the room and assume the roles on a Scrum Team: Product Owner, ScrumMaster, and 3 Developers. We can also add Line Manager. • Each player will be given a secret goal, a way of being that will impact their interactions. • Using a fictitious project with pre-prepared Scrum artifacts, they will run through a couple of sprints, using the Scrum ceremonies – Daily Scrum, Sprint Grooming, Sprint Planning, etc. • We’ll see if the audience can spot the warning signs, and discuss ways to correct course.

In this workshop, participants will engage in a competitive LEGO simulation where teams will be asked to build a simple LEGO structure - each team’s structure will be scored based on its design, height, and how long the team waits to begin, whereby an incentive is provided to wait until the last responsible moment. The intent of the build activity is to allow teams to improve skills to make effective self-managing team decisions, as ultimately each team must decide when they wish to begin building, so experience is gained in identifying trade-offs, and using decision making protocols. After building, teams will debrief on what went well and where there were opportunities to improve seeking to increase their scores. The focus of this workshop will then pivot to focus on practices supportive of organizational learning between teams. Following the build challenge, participants will be given an “experiment canvas” and asked to define a problem, hypothesis, and indicator related to attempting to improve their score. The build challenge will then be repeated to allow participants to conduct their experiments and test their hypotheses. Participants will leave the workshop having experienced an engaging exercise they can use within self-managing teams to improve team decision making skills, and learned how to complete an “experiment canvas” they can integrate into practices such as retrospectives to improve organizational learning and sharing insights between teams.

The Three Things You Need to Know to Transform Any Sized Organization into an Agile Enterprise
The deeper we go down the path of scaled agile transformation, the more we are learning that adding additional process and additional complexity can only ever get us part of the way there. At some point size and complexity is going to limit our ability to be truly agile. To be truly agile, we have to reduce size and complexity and move toward greater organizational simplicity. The challenge is that large organizations are often complex and usually anything but simple.

Most agile transformations get started by either ignoring the complexity inherent in the system or by wrapping that complexity in planning constructs that can help in the short run, but are ultimately doomed to limit your business agility over time. There has to be another way. To really achieve agility at scale, we have to stop chasing more advanced ways to manage complexity and seek out more effective patterns for moving toward greater simplicity. In short, it’s not the end state of an agile transformation that we must stay focused on; it’s the systematic process of reducing complexity that is critical to achieving your ultimate business goals.

To transform any sized organization into an agile enterprise, there are only three things you need to know to be successful:
  1. You must have complete cross functional teams. 
  2. You must have clear backlogs. 
  3. You must have the ability to produce a working, tested increment of product on regular intervals. 
Every other benefit of agile is impossible without creating these three conditions for success; everything that gets in the way of creating these three conditions is an impediment to your transformation which has to be removed; and your transformation roadmap should be solely focused on how your going to make all this possible in your organization. Until you make this happen... nothing much else is going to matter.

This talk will explore patterns for creating cross-functional teams at scale, what that looks like, what get’s in the way, and how to get there. We’ll discover why clear backlogs are so hard to create and what you'll need to do about it. Warning, this will not be easy! Finally, we’ll discuss why working tested software created on regular intervals is the secret sauce to actually getting the business benefits your organization is looking for.

So often we start our projects with a problem and a solution already in mind, usually handed to us by either management or a product owner. Equally as often during the project we find ourselves discovering that the problem handed down was not the problem to solve at all, but something else entirely. We’ll start to call this phenomenon scope creep and do all we can to either stop the change or start making huge trade offs to accommodate the change. This session takes us back a step in the process and proposes a better way to help our customers explore and define the problem before we start building the solution. Using the Design Thinking approach from the Stanford School of Design (http://dschool.stanford.edu/dgift/#gear-up) we will show how this can be used to work with our customers to clearly define the problem space and generate an approach to solve the problem. Creating a product without a shared vision is like trying to read a sign without your glasses. There's a lot of squinting and guessing as to what the sign says. Where one person sees an E another might see a T. In the end, no one can agree on what the sign says and everyone has a headache.

Better Ways of Developing Software. Or, Coding Like a Unicorn

The way software is developed and run in production has changed dramatically over the past ten years. These changes are just now reaching the “mainstream” who are looking to respond to the idea that “software is eating the world” and use software like all the “unicorns” we read about in the market. Getting your advice strictly from unicorn companies can feel a lot like getting dieting advice from celebrities: it sure will work if you have unlimited resources, few constraints, and, well, are already successful. What can the rest of shlubs who actually work in “the real world do” to get closer to the benefits of being “cloud native”?

This talk answers that question by looking at the current state of IT and how the role of IT has changed in recent years: if around ⅔ of businesses think IT doesn’t help them innovate, how is IT going to be effective in an era where custom written software is key to surviving and thriving in a business world where competitive advantages are now highly transient? Building on my observations in recent years about what technologies are helping organizations and, more importantly, the organizational and process (“culture,” the unicorns call it) the rest of the talk goes over how organizations can switch up their tools and approach to IT to code like a unicorn.

Fallacies of Software Developers
Software developers get a bad rap. People think we're opinionated, because we blindly adhere to technology decisions we made last year. They think we're dogmatic because we attribute every problem with their software to a lack of pair programming. They think we have no idea what we're doing because we refuse to provide any level of estimate when presented with a problem. Unfortunately we as an industry reinforce these perceptions all too frequently. We value our opinions to the point that we can't see other's points of view. We work hard to deeply understand a technology and then can't separate ourselves from it when evaluating solutions to a problem. We delay difficult conversations until the point where we're unable to have them in a healthy manner. I've held firmly to many fallacies in my career that have kept me from truly reaching my goals and that of my clients. This talk will explore the most painful and common ones that I and others make on an all too frequent basis. Hopefully, attendees can avoid them or at least be self aware and understand the impact that they have on others.

Using Agile To Delight CEO’s
Agile methodology is rightfully focused on developing software that delights users with enjoyable and productive user experiences, pleasant user interfaces and unparalleled ease of use. But how do we simultaneously delight our CEOs and other stakeholders that support and fund our projects, but may not necessarily ever use our software? After all, those who are footing the bill are ultimately much more concerned with reducing costs, increasing productivity and maximizing profitability than they are with delightful user experiences. The answer lies in extending the tenets of agile (continuous improvement, reduction of wasteful processes, etc.) to the enterprise business processes that our software supports. We all know that every application is in place to facilitate a set of core processes that help the business achieve some key objective (e.g., raw materials to finished goods, order to cash, purchase to payment, etc.). All too often though, we use our expertise to deliver systems that support established organizational processes without questioning the soundness and efficiency of those processes. In doing so, we often fail to identify and capitalize on opportunities to improve processes and workflows that would have an incredible impact on productivity and profitability. If we accept the responsibility to question the status quo of the core business processes that impact our system (via inputs, outputs, data flows, integration points, etc.), we have a much better chance of driving the kinds of efficiencies that will make our business sponsors eager to green-light projects. This session focuses on extending the agile mission from simply the delivery of delightful software to the delivery of delightful (and much more profitable) business processes. In doing so, we create a scenario where the agile practitioner becomes the Continuous Improvement/Process Engineering function that so many organizations lack, but sorely need. Even more importantly, we will drive efficiencies that maximize the value and ROI that we deliver to our organizations – and delight our CEO’s and key stakeholders in the process.

FireDice - Learning why WIP (Work-In-Progress) limits really matter
The practice of establishing & working within Work-In-Progress (WIP) limits helps agile teams make predictable progress towards their goals. Proper WIP limits promote flow & enable self-managing teams to best decide where to focus their efforts. While the concept of WIP limits is easy to understand, many newer teams can struggle to establish & work within them - new teams also may not realize the risks of not respecting WIP limits until it is too late. In this workshop, participants will experience “gamified learning” on how WIP limits can improve team activities by encourage work in progress to be completed before beginning new work - the intent of this practice to maximize the value delivered. “Fire Dice” was created as an agile learning game designed to provide new teams a safe environment to learn how to establish & work within WIP limits - “Fire Dice” come into play whereby teams can choose to exceed their WIP limit (using special Dice); however, this comes at a cost, hence players must assess the pros/cons of using Fire Dice. The workshop and game will also provide participants an opportunity to practice making effective team decisions on how to prioritize and manage their work seeking to maximize the value they deliver. In this workshop, participants will have FUN by playing “Fire Dice” to experiment with establishing proper WIP limits to improve flow within agile development activities. Why Should I Go See Another White Man Talk About Diversity in IT?
Well-funded programs at large tech firms like Google, Amazon, and Yahoo struggle to make minor gains in diversity in the workplace. Many presentations have focused on the important work of solving the "pipeline" problem of too few women and minorities entering software development. Indeed, there exists another diversity problem: up to 50% of the women who make it to STEM careers ultimately leave them. In this presentation, Jeff will identify some of the "thousand cuts" that women and minorities experience at work that, taken together, add up to hostile and exclusionary environments. He will give examples of words and actions that are exclusionary without meaning to be, and suggest concrete changes that team members can make right away to create a more inclusive workplace.

The Dice Game Remix
The Dice Game is a simple but powerful experiential learning exercise for new teams that demonstrates flow, value and teamwork. Its major objective is to demonstrate the impact of batch size from waterfall to lean flow in scrum or kanban. For new scrum teams we will briefly introduce the basic game. Then I will introduce add-ons to the game that I have discovered to demonstrate the value of focusing on flow and the impact of quality on predicting team performance. A Family That Hacks Together, Interacts Together!

Everyone's heard the old saying "A family thats plays together, stays together", right? Well this session is going to kick that up a notch and talk about getting the family to "hack" together. It starts out discussing the different forms of hacking a family might embrace and at what age levels each might be best suited. Along the way it highlights what supplies & equipment you might need, as well as suggesting the overall costs that one might expect to incur. It then takes a brief focus on safety and proper use of that equipment. The session finishes off with some tips and tricks that may help with both the hacks themselves, as well as getting the family to actually interact by joining in on the fun.
